To my knowledge there is no inbuilt checking for spellings in vi. What you can do is run the command: :spell %
What this essentially means is that you are running an external command "spell <filename>" (% maps to the name of the file being edited currently). spell is a command often used in unix for spell checking. You can use your own. You can also map this command to a command of your own choice, say SC. To do this, you'll need to put the following line in your .vimrc: command SC !spell % Now you can just run the command ":SC" and a spell check would be done.
