If kppp worked then wvdial should also work, anyways
you can also try by editing the /etc/ppp/options file.
And uncomment that stupid mode =1. Sometimes syipid
mode can greatly help.

There will be lots of options in that file look for
the following ones and uncomment those which are
commented:

noauth
defaultroute
lock
ipcp-accept-local
ipcp-accept-remote
usepeerdns
passive

If you want to force PAP authentication you can also
add the option refuse-chap. Similarly if you want to
force CHAP authentication you can add the refuse-pap
option. Neither of these should be necessary with
wvdial however.

I also faced similar kind of problems couple of days
back and I found on my box the noauth,
ipcp-accept-local and ipcp-accept-remote were
commented out. The meaning of these options should be
explained as a comment in /etc/ppp/options file.
