Dear Linux users,
I have been using mutt/fetchmail/sendmail for quite a while on my home
computer without problems. However, I now have to shift to a new place
for mail usage. Here, the setup is different, and I'll attempt to
describe it correctly. Note that I may be technically wrong in certain
desriptions; please correct me.

The OS is Red Hat 9.0, and I log into diskless PC's and the system is
mounted using NFS, from the same system for all persons, i.e. I *think*
we all get identical /usr, /var, /home etc. We have a separate mail
server with servers for IMAP, POP and SMTP, and we can't log into them.

Now, in the beginning, when I was new to the system, I asked the system
administrator whether I could use the ordinary "mail" program for
e-mail, but the admin said that is not possible with this setup.
However, now I feel this is possible, if sendmail is properly
configured, since /var is also mounted from a common place, so
/var/spool/mail/(user) should be available to all. Is it not so?

Anyway, I want to use mutt to handle my mail. Now, I can configure
fetchmail to get messages using POP from the mail server. But fetchmail
refuses to write fetched messages because the sendmail service is not
running.

Well, I could use the "fetch-mail" feature in mutt itself. But then,
again, how do I send mail? sendmail is not configured to deliver to the
SMTP server, and the administrator doesn't seem to be in a mood to
configure it right now (maybe I can pester him next week). Is there
still a way for me to use mutt?

Please note that I have only limited space there (~ 10MB). So, if the
solution is costly in terms of disk space, I might as well forget it and
use the no frills web based interface.

This may not be relevant, but the admin has configured pine for all of
us by default. Here are two lines from pine.conf

inbox-path={mail}/var/spool/mail/$USER
smtp-server=mail

Please let me know if there is a solution you can think of.

Thanks.
Kumar

P.S. I don't know why, but I don't like pine, esp. after using mutt!
