The overall mechanism how /sbin/init works is mostly the same across all Linux
distributions.
However, the way system startup scripts work - vary from one distro to another. The
/etc/inittab file thus will look a bit different (the names and locations of startup
scripts vary, runlevel schemes vary). Though the format /syntax of /etc/inittab
remains the same.

You can walk-through the system startup scripts to get an idea about how the system
startup scripts are called (rc.sysinit and rc on Redhat/Fedora/Mandrake. rcS and rc on
debian. rc.S and rc.M on Slackware). These scripts must be located either in
/etc/init.d/ or /etc/rc.d/ directories.
