For an end-user, that should be fine (and yes, he can use joe, jove,
gedit, or whatever). But I wouldn't appoint a Linux sysadmin who has no
clue about vi!

mutt configuration can be automated. It can be easily maintained. Can
you configure Outlook express without running the Outlook express
program ? What if you had to configure Outlook express on 500 machines ?
I'm sure you will be busy searching for some tool to automate the
process, while I would have mutt setup already ;-).

Same goes with Microsoft Word - the wizards only complicate things, not
simplify!

I'm not against wizards and stuff... just that they are too
newbie-friendly, and not flexible enough for a seasoned sysadmin's
needs. A Linux sysadmin who finds comfort in wizards is mostly clueless
about whats going on underneath these shiny interfaces. Lately, I have
come across a lot of Linux "sysadmins" who have no clue about how to
disable a service without using redhat-config-* or chkconfig (just in
case, they had to boot from a knoppix live CD-ROM to rescue their broken
redhat setup).
