that is directly playing a vcd. if yu want to play a .dat file, for e.g.
just a video clip saved on your system, yu may not be able to do so in
the default scenario. what yu need to do is create a symlink and rename
that symlink to .mpg and it'll work.
in nautilus doing that is very simple, just middle-click drag the file
from the nautilus window to desktop. it'll give yu options to create a
link or copy the file, choose 'Link here' and then rename that link
to .mpg. if yu're using gnome, it'll also automatically create a
thumbnail for yu and then yu can easily play the file in totem or
mplayer
