Emacs has been praised by many. It's said to be an all-in-one editor.<snip>Do we have similar environments for VIM ? I like the idea vim has of modes. Is there any software which is just like Emacs(with loads of features like mail, web, development) but designed specifically for vim
Vim tries to be *only* an editor and does a good job at it. Emacs tries to be your operating environment thus integrating (almost) all the tools and applications that programmers (and users alike) generally use, into a single place making them accessible right inside the editor. Clearly, the goals of Vi(m) and (X)Emacs are _supposedly_ different. However, lately I realised that vim (with its scripting extensions) has begun to do things the Emacs way - adding in features not directly relevant to text editing like web browsing, mail, games, development tools, and so on.
Check out http://www.vim.org/scripts/ to add more power to your vim editor.
I see jed to be promising too. Good curses based interface. Would have been great if it also supported the vi modes thingy...
