Hello,
A client of mine wants to shift from Oracle to a different database due to its
high cost. My knowledge as far as databases go is negligible. He is in guages
manufacturing and needs a strong database capable of carrying lot of load in
future. My recommendation were mysql or posgresql. What do you think is the
better choice? Or is there another one? The reason for mysql was that many programmers are already familar with it and getting people to work on it will
be easy. What is the case with posgresql - any advantages or disadvantages?

I would say go for postgresql. The reasons are

- Much better SQL standards compliance
- Much closer to oracle in terms of syntax. Hence less migration efforts
- Supports multiple platforms including many flavours of Unix and Windows(This is new..)
- Proven track record of reliability and scalability
- Lot of options w.r.t. client languages
- Unparalled Extensions such as custom data types, languages, rules etc.
- Totally Free(BSD licensed)
- Available today and deployed by many

I wouldn't get into database comparisons since I know postgresql only.. But here are some links which I think you would find useful..

http://sql-info.de/mysql/gotchas.html
http://techdocs.postgresql.org/
http://advocacy.postgresql.org/
http://www.postgresql.org/news/235.html

If you want to run real life tests and comparisons, including firebird(http://firebird.sourceforge.net/) might be a good idea.

If you eventually switch to postgresql, drop me a line. I would be interested in a case study.
