Christmas greetings to everyone,

Nessus seems to have changed their plugin update policy. What was once
free (as beer) seems to have been split into three distinct policies -
* a direct feed available only to commercial subscribers
($1200/scanner/year),
* a registered feed which contains plugins updated one week after they
appear in the direct feed; this feed requires user registration
* a GPL feed which does not require registration, but will contain only
plugins written by the user community.

The turn of events feels very similar to SAINT, which was once free,
then became registered software, and finally a commercial-only product.
I really hope Nessus does not go that way.

I use Nessus on a regular basis to check for vulnerabilities on boxen
that I look after and having to wait a week for updates after a
vulnerability is disclosed is simply not an option, especially for
network boxen that have internet access.

What do the others on the forum feel about this? Are there any other
open source network scanners out there (what about SARA?) that could
substitute the functionality of Nessus?

Regards,
Vinu.
