I have seen a 40 GB ide work perfectly on a PC whose
BIOS supports just 8 GB.

The BIOS detects the ide as 8GB, but after linux
loads, all of the 40 GB is visible and usable.

Sujith, i think you can safely buy a 160 GB and go
ahead with linux installation.... the BIOS should not
matter.

One suggestion though -- when you install on 160 GB,
make sure you have one small primary partiion residing
within the first 8 GB space which can be mounted as
/boot -- this should be enough to solve everything.
