Well....I'm on BSNL Broadband now.....

The Modem given to me is a Chinese make HUAWEI, model SmartAX MT800; a
beautiful piece looking like two cupped hands holding each other. The
bottom part is green and the top is white. Also has a stand for keeping
the modem upright. Power supply is separate and so also the splitter.
Connection is through a RJ45 cable to my network card.

Setup was extremely simple, As root, I ran 'pppoeconf'. It detected my
modem, got the IP nos. etc. asked me if I wanted to give the IPs for DNS
resolving or it should take from the service provider. I did not know
any IPs for DNS so I told it to take from the service provider. Then I
was asked for my username and password. After this it wanted to know
whether I want the modem to connect on power-up. I said yes, and there I
was, after a reboot, happily surfing, as a user.

I checked up, the /etc/ppp directory had some new files -
chap-secrets, pap-secrets, ppp_on_boot and resolv.conf.

Next, some measurements.
Through syanptic, I downloaded Mozilla-firefox. Some dependency files
were also downloaded, a total of 14160.5kB (capitalB). The download took
exactly 8mins or 480secs. So, the average speed was
14160.5/480=29.5kB/s.
BSNL claims broadband speed of 256kbps. Taking 1B=8b, 29.5kB/s * 8 =
236kbps, which looks quite close to the claim.

Hope my maths is right.
