I shudder to think of a system being admininistered by a person who
cannot distinguish between latest verion of a software and stability.
Your statement happens to be true at this particular point in time
when Debian's next stable version is imminent.
Debian does not really "ship". They made stable releases, on average,
every couple of years. When a stable version is released, it contains
pretty new and *stable* versions of software with no release critical
bugs against them. In the approximately two years that pass between
releases, Debian continues to issue major security related bug fixes
against the version contained in stable in the form of sub-releases.
This ensures that the stable vesion is just that - stable. This
arrangement suits many servers.
However, there are times when a sys admin requires the latest version
of a specific piece of software (say, spamassassin) because the new
version really does have vital features. In these cases the diserning
system admin has a few choices:
1. Use backports.
2. Use a Debian-based distribution like Ubuntu that ships (yes,
actually ships) with latest versions of software.
3. Install from source.
4. Custom build a package from latest source.
In short, I would rather my servers were administered by someone who
is clueful and does not depend of merely plopping a CD and expecting
the right thing to happen.
Thaths
PS: dpkg can kick rpm's ass.
