Dear all, I am using postfix 2.0.16-14.RHEL3 and courier imap 3.0.6-1.3ES in my RHEL 3 based box. The server is a DELL machine with Xeon processor and has 512M of RAM and 3 x 36G hard disks with RAID-5. The web mail interface is squirrel mail. The server hosts mail for around 800 users. Around 60% of the users are using web mail and the balance are using Outlook/Outlook Express The problem that I am facing is that every now and then the web mail users are facing problems in logging-in to their account. They get an error "Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 4097 bytes) in /usr/share/squirrelmail/functions/imap_general.php on line 48" At this point the general response of the server also comes down drastically. The problem goes away once I restart the courier-imap. I have tried increasing the memory_limit in the /etc/php.ini and find that this freezes the whole server and I am left with no other alternative but to reboot the machine. While searching in GOOGLE I found that one person has solved the problem by changing the MAXPERIP setting to 16 from the default 4 in the file /usr/lib/courier-imap/etc/imapd. Though I implemented this, I don't find any improvement. My questions are: 1) Can any one suggest some way to improve the situation? 2) Can I configure a separate machine with courier-imap/apache/squirrelmail and make it read the maildir from the original mail server and in this way separate the loads of postfix and imap part? How do I do it?
