You can set up a multi tiered system, with incoming email on a machine, then hands off the email to maildirs on a separate machine, webmail on another, and then a third machine for pop3 / smtp auth'd email.

NFS mounting the maildir box to the pop3 and smtp auth machines, and finding some way like ldap or mysql to give the webmail etc boxes access to your userdb should help. Courier IMAP has authdaemon support for both ldap and mysql. Squirrelmail checks IMAP basically.

And see what all you can do to tune squirrelmail.
