http://kumar.travisbsd.org/screenshots/ In the above URL, there are screenshots of Wikipedia in Tamil and Hindi. Personally, I don't like their `choice' (?) of Tamil fonts, but it is quite readable. The Hindi font is excellent. I can also saythat the Bengali font is good. Others who can read their languages can chip in... By the way, this is not exactly an answer to your question, as it does not enable general Indian Language computing on GNU/Linux. The screenshots just show that on my Debian system, Konqueror renders Indian languages quite well, when I have the ttf-indic-fonts packages installed. You might be interested in using a localized KDE or GNOME if you are interested in some Indian language computing, though I have no experience with them.
