When you boot into _rescue_ mode your root partition gets mounted, generally on /mnt/sysimage under RH. You need to chroot to it. That's one step I found missing in the steps you mentioned above. Once you chroot you can use the grub-install command to restore grub. But you didn't mention whether you boot using grub or some other boot loader (xosl, ntloader et cetera). If you use grub to boot into all the OS's, you should be restoring it to the mbr of the hard drive which is your primary boot device which I think in your setup would be /dev/hda.
