Could you check up on the version of the Xorg you are using ? If I recall correctly 6.8 allows dual head on Intel cards (I am assuming that the 50e has an Intel). Additionally, check for a setting in the xorg.conf that allows dual head to be set up either as spanning/xinerama or individual desktops.
