However, Hindi in Firefox and Thunderbird isn't working; I get the
letters displayed wrong (as "ihndi", where "nd" is actually "na" +
halant + da). However, as soon as I copy and paste this wrong text
into gedit or kedit, it appears quite allright.

Anyway, I got uch more than the basic functionality I was looking for,
and am able to input Tamil and Hindi without problems in text
editors. Thanks a lot for the suggestion.
