Hopefully, the person at the remote end is Linux savvy.  Even so, give

What was the setting of the disks under the RAID controller - JBOD? 
RAID0?  Pls. tell us so that we can learn from your experience.

Also, did you run the fdisk again after disabling the RAID controller?

What you are experiencing below should not occur if the hard disk was 
fdisk'd as a "stand alone" disk.

Does your initrd image contain the drivers for the SCSI controller?

On which hard disk partitions are /boot /root installed?  /dev/hda?

What mount points are assigned to /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2?
