Yes we did fdisk after disabling the Hostraid.

Not sure about it. But we are booting it from an ide hard disk and I think
it doesnt matter.

In another mailing list mailing list I was told that the Adaptec Host raid
is not a harware raid but it a firmware based pseudo RAID and we need to 
create software
RAID on linux. More on this can be found here

Unfortunately the person on the remote side wanted his machine to be up
desparately and hence we have just used only one disk with a workaround
(parprobe /dev/sda).
