I have a peculiar problem with a new HP Compaq nx6115 notebook.
This is an AMD Turion 64 based notebook with ATI Radeon XPress 200
M series graphics card with LPL LG Philips LCD monitor capable of
1024x768 resolution, 24 bit colour.

I have tried and successfully installed different distributions on
it
(including Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, Debian latest, Mandriva 2007 and
finally
openSuse 10.2).

They all boot into the graphical desktop and work fine. But there
is one problem - if I try Ctrl-Alt-Fn to access a console, the
display gets garbled. I can only see white and black flickering
bands. Attempting to get back via Ctrl-Alt-F7 fails also.

So if I do Ctrl-Alt-Fn, the options left for me are pressing the
power button to force a shutdown or typing in a shutdown command
on a console which I cannot see. The latter works, indicating that
the system is alright but for some reason the display is incapable
of making the switch.

The same problem occurs if I choose shutdown or restart from the
Start menu. The system will shutdown or reboot but the display
shows only bands.

I have disabled options such as a splash screen during boot,
vesa-fb mode for the console etc. But the problem is not solved.

Will be very grateful for any pointers on this.

Regards
Pramathesh Ambasta
