I've had some issues with my hard disk being slow, though it's slow in
Windows as well as Linux. It's a Seagate Medalist 8641 - an 8 point
something gig.

I consistently get around 10mb/s, which is not very nice. I've used
kernels 2.0.30 upto the latest 2.2.14. Atleast in the 2.2.x kernels, I've
seen no change through versions.

I also use hdparm to turn on 32bit transfers, read ahead, multiword dma
mode 2, irq unmasking, multcount=32.
