GNU make is well documented in /usr/info/make.info.
As far as Linux programming is concerned, the Unix classics

  a) The Unix Programming environment (Kernighan & Pike)
  b) Unix Power tools (O'Reilly)
  c) Advanced Programming in the Unix environment (Stevens)
  d) Design of the Unix Operating System (Bach)

are better than any Linux specific book I have seen. Also,
Eric Raymond is writing an 'open source' book about the
art of Unix programming. (one or two
chapters are available as of now). Check out

LI is all for free speech, but this list was created for a purpose --
to help popularise Linux in India. If your messages are counterproductive
to that purpose, your privileges to submit messages can and will be revoked.
