About 3 months ago I had a bad hardware experience.
At that time I was a member of the ilug-cal mailing list and so had
posted the thing on that list. However I never got a satisfactory reply
so I'm reposting it here .
I still have the card but I have removed it from my machine and enabled
the on-board sound chip which is currently working...
Here is my original mail/query...

Well folks I had a bad experience with linux yesterday. As some of you
know I have (had) an Opti 931 based sound card which I have been trying
to get working under linux since way back . I tried with the mad drivers

( which support the opti 930 ) a long time back. however opti 931
support was only added in redhat 6.0 . I went step by step as given in
the documentation . I managed to configure opl3 and then I managed to
get cdaudio pcm (mp3 and wav) and midi running. However when slightly
longer wav files were played there was jerkiness and the mp3 files got
stuck at places like a cracked record and only on seeking to another
spot
would they play. so I shut down esd and tried catting stuff to
/dev/audio . Nothing happened. then like a fool I catted something to
/dev/dsp got a long burst of white noise.

tried a few more tricks but couldn't get it working to my satisfaction.
Thought that the card might require specific irq settings so went back
into windows to check if any thing else was required. Windows failed to
show the card. Tried to manually install the drivers. no dice.
Went back into linux did a pnpdump the card no longer appeared in the
list. I.e the card was dead fried finito. That same card has been
working happily under windows from 1998. Anybody think they can help ?
Luckily I had another sound card integrated into my mother board which
I Switched over to . but I'd appreciate any help in post mortem
analysis of my card ... or further inputs. I read somewhere that the pnp

info resides on a bios chip on the card. could this have blown ? or has
the whole card gone ?

Any inputs anybody ?
