Hi,

I am currently working on a HA package. I need to monitor the status
of the
various Ethernet links. Apparently the statistics provided in /proc/net/dev
are not very reliable. Here is what I did, I started an ftp transfer from
one m/c to another. While it was going on, I pulled out the respective
cable. After this, when I went back to check the statistics, it still showed
packets being received and Tx. The errors count did NOT change. I
understand that there are 2 ways of implementing TCP, namely, the Strong end
and the Weak end Systems. Also, Linux implements the Weak end System where
in if I have 2 or more cards and one of the cables is down, I can still
receive packets addressed to that card thro the other cards that are up!
Apparently this is not very helpful. Is there any way that I can prevent or
change this ??!
Any help in this regard will be truly appreciated.
                                Regards,
                                                              Sandeep Sundaram
