HotSync won't use IR unless you download and install some IR
extensions:

Get the irenhanc package from Palm -- this makes the IR port programmable
through the serial manager, so any app that uses serial will automatically
use IR instead (selectable in Prefs).

Then install BeamSync, which enables IR HotSyncing:

Then set up irattach /dev/ttyS0 or whatever, and then /dev/ircomm0 is good
to go.

I use this setup all the time, with pilot-xfer.  The only problem I've
found is that the first time the Linux stack is installed it doesn't work
(this is with 2.2.18+).  So just abort and try again; then it's fine.
