Another way to test - 
Go to Radio Shack, and get an IR Tester (but I can't find it on their
website) -  it looks like 1/2 of laminated business card with a little 
brown patch on it. You charge it by exposing to UV (fluorescent or 
sunlight), then it will give off red when it gets hit by IR light.
