Apologies for continuing to follow up to myself, but I am making
progress towards finding the root of the problem, and I really would
appreciate some feedback.

I have now tried the dongle with Windows 98 - works perfectly with the
8210.

I have tried the phone under 2.2.17 using a "normal" IR port (not
dongle) - works perfectly.

Looking more likely.

See 1.
I have also tried an Erikson phone, and a Palm with the dongle. Both
work perfectly. So my conclusion is that there is an incompatibility
between 8210s and either (i) the linux-irda driver (ii) some change made
in the Linux irda implementation between 2.2.17 and 2.4.5 (I haven't
tried a "normal" IR port with a 2.4 kernel)
The symptoms are that IrCOMM communications with the phone are very
slow, and very quickly the dongle dies altogether.
I have been trying to figure out which device sends the last packet
using a 3rd IR device - a second laptop. Unfortunately, irdadump only
shows details until the other two devices connect. Is there anyway I
can get irdadump to show all traffic, even between other connected
devices?
cheers,
Paul
