The smc-ircc module never loads right the first time (at least for me), altough it loads right the second time. Besides, it seems to misdetect its DMA (the chip says "DMA4" but it does work when I manually override it with "DMA3"). I think that a possible cause for the problems might be some kind of DMA conflict, but I am not sure whether it should also affect SIR mode (does it use DMA?) If you think of anything I could to in order to help you debug this problem, just tell me! (I do like to have sound enabled, and I would appreciate being able to use IrDA as well :-)).
