Before anyone else takes the trouble to answer, I would like to say that I
have fixed the problem and it had nothing to do with the IRDA part. My
palm had the sript set on waiting for ogin:, which of course doesn't work. 

So as usual all my fault, reading a lot helps, reading it carefully helps
more.
