I've been able to make irda work on the satellite 3000-214 with smc-ircc
module and kernel 2.4.16. I'm not sure whether I was using it as a SIR
or FIR device but at module insertion, the chip is detected with
relevant ioport/irq/dma, and irdadump works.

Maybe you use some utility like setserial that make you port unavailable
by dfault as it did here ; but leaving ttyS0 free should allow you to
use irda.
