Hmmm... tried using:

setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none port 0 irq 0
setserial /dev/ttyS1 uart none port 0 irq 0

before bringing up irda0 (defined as smc-ircc in modules.conf, with irq 
and dma set to the defaults, 3) and smc-ircc still doesn't load.

Would you mind having a look in your BIOS for me to see what settings 
you're using?
