You can use dongle_attach to do this: 

1. insmod irport io=0x3e8 irq=11 # Fix for your settings, see what setserial
                                 # uses, and be sure to rmmod serial before
                                 # you try, so the resources are free

2. dongle_attach -d girbil irda0

I will try to build this stuff into irattach ASAP.
