I've not heard of the L6089. I just use IRCOMM with irtty to talk to it.

The AT commands I use (since Orange now allow 14k4 connections):
AT+CBST=14,0,1 (for an analogue modem line)
AT+CBST=75,0,1 (for a digital line - Demon's 3COM ISDN line supports this,
                and Orange tell me the 0973100666 number soon will.)

Than I just do an ordinary ATDT<number> command.
