Guess you don't have the latest tools like automake, autoconf, libtool
etc. I'm using:
automake-1.4
autoconf-2.14
libtool-1.3.3

I think I would first try to print from the Newton to Linux. Try to do
something like this (using Linux-2.2.14-irda1)
1. cat /dev/irlpt0 > newton.out
2. print something from the Newton to Linux
3. cat newton.out
4. check if what you received was the same thing as you sent.
PS. /dev/irlpt0 should look like this:
crw-r--r-- 1 root 161, 16 Nov 5 08:36 /dev/irlpt0
