Hi Trenton,
The real expert for the IrDA stuff is Dag Brattli, but I remember this
question popped up on the Linux IrDA mailing list. As I remember, the
frequencies specified for IrDA hardware are quite different and not as
variable as most remote controls and this makes it infeasible to use most
IrDA hardware as a remote control. A project was started to create a program
to use the Palm Pilot as a universal remote but never really acheived much
because of this hardware limitation.
