You must do "ifup irlan0" on both computers. To me if sounds like you have
only done this one one of them. Try running irdadump, it should show that
both computers have LAN capability in the discovery frames (XID).

You don't have IrDA suppor in your ifconfig program. If you don't want to
see the UNSPEC stuff then install the net-tools and recompile with IrDA
support. This is the default in RH-6.1

You haven't made contact with the other computer yet! Have you enabled
irlan on the other computer?

I'll do some testing without Fast RR's enabled, since it's a long time
since I've done it.
PS. If you get any problems with the Tekram dongle (I sometimes do), the
you'll need to do "ifconfig irda0 down up" to reset it again.
