Hi:

I have recently written a bit about problems with a Motorola L Series
IrDA modem. In summary, Linux IrDA reports "waiting for CST" when
I try to open ircomm0, I have had to resort to software flow control,
and the performance is poor. In addition, opening the device seems
to have a marginal feature. I sometimes have to activate the phone IR
several times.

Months ago I wrote about problems with a BJC-80 printer connected through
ircomm. Again I find with the recent kernels I have trouble opening the
device, and often go through several power cycles to get it working. Once
it does the device remains reliably open, but the throughput, with
software flow control, is very poor.

Extremely frustrated with the Motorola performance, and trying several
variants on the pppd settings, I suddenly found the IrDA communication had
gone into what I would describe as "normal". pppd worked _without_ turning
off hardware flow control, when the ppp link was being established the
exchanges with the ISP were fast, then telnet responsiveness was good,
and file transfers approached 1kbytes/s. When I stopped pppd,
I was able to "cu -l /dev/ircomm0" as I would expect to do for an
Ericsson phone and type AT commands. I'm kicking myself for not trying
slip at the time, but I bet it would have worked.

My conclusion is that we still have a problem establishing the initial ircomm
connection with some devices, and that the problem with those is
similar to problems we had a year ago with almost all devices, of sorting
out the modem control signals. I suspect this relates to the comments
like "you have to turn the ... on before/after starting irda or it will
not work". Somehow I stumbled on the right combination (workaround!) for
the Motorola, but do not know how, and have not yet reproduced it :-(

I'm hopeful these observations will trigger some ideas we can turn into
code.

Dave
