I have this exact setup (n505x & timeport) working with 2.3.99pre3
(and also with 2.2.15pre5).
Extract from modules.conf:

alias irda0 nsc-ircc
options nsc-ircc dongle_id=0x09

Then it's a simple matter of "irattach irda0 -s"
