IrLAN is a bit tricky to get working. But also, the IrDA stack
did change a lot, and that might be an issue. 2.2.14- has the old
version of the stack, 2.2.15+ (and 2.2.14 with the correct patch) has
the new version. So, the first thing is to know which version of the
stack is on your laptop. Easier : just upgrade the laptop to 2.2.16 to
be sure of what you have.

And please don't run irdaping when playing with something else...
Now, if you are willing to experiment, I would advise you to
play with IrNET. The Linux-IrNET implementation is already much more
stable, straightforward and functional than the IrLAN one, despite
being much younger (because IrNET reuse mostly well tested
components). The only catch is that IrNET is available only for 2.4.X
kernels and require a patch.
