Hi!

Previously I had an Ericsson SH888 which I couldn't get to work properly
with the new (2.2.15+) version of ircomm-tty and the cable. The phone
would appear in the discovery log, but as soon as one opened
/dev/ircomm0 (161 0) the phone went silent after an IR speed change
command, only to be rediscovered some minutes later.

Now I've lost the SH888 and got an (insurance-money-paid) I888 with
exactly the same problem. (with a 2.2.17-pre something kernel). However,
the phone serial cable works fine with a 2.2.12 kernel and /dev/irnine
(60 64) and the old ircomm_tty implementation. Managed to run UUCP
connections with receiving speeds of 1100+ byte/s and an
Ericsson-tailored mgetty.

For various reasons I need the later kernels, however so I went off and
bought a Tekram 210 dongle to use the actual infrared communication
instead of the serial cable. Thought this would do it and it did. At
least I was able to communicate with my phone with the 2.2.17-pre
something kernel, but as soon as thing started to speed up, (sending
data at high rates) the phone suddenly stopped communincating. The
irdadump shows that suddenly the phone goes silent, reappears and sends
some stuff after one second or so, and then dies indefinetly, at least
until I close the connection and the discovery process starts again.
This does not seem to be a problem with Linux irDA, however since
exactly the same thing happens if I move the Tekram dongle to a windows
machine and use it from there. In fact, I can't even get the windows
machine to read the address book properly. It stopps after a while and
says the connection is broken.

So my questions are:

1. No one really seems to get an 888 working properly with _CABLE_ and
the new ircomm-tty (161 0) implementation. At least I've seen a number
of people on this list who has not. It worked for me for a brief while
once, but I could not repeat it. Does anybody have a suggestion?

2. (Maybe a bit off-topic, sorry for that). Does anybody know why the
Tekram-to-888 connection works so poorly? Is the problem most likely
related to the dongle or the phone? (Even the receiving LED on the
Tekram dongle goes black when the communication breaks...)
I heard something about a firmware update for the phone...

Any suggestions on these two topics would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Thomas
