I don't run 2.2.17, but with 2.2.16 I get IrDA to run at serial speed
115 200 or something like that, for the moment that is enough for my
use.

I think sony ships their laptops with the SMC ir chip set, which still
is poorly supported...
At least I have never go mine to work...

try to use irattach on the tty that is your IrDA port..
then you will at least get SIR support =)
