Step by step - Load the irda module and the irport stuff.
Enable discovery by "echo 1 >/proc/sys/net/irda/discovery" and
do an "ifconfig irda0" - You should now see tx and rx count
in "ifconfig" to count up.

Also you shoudl see the S35 in /proc/net/irda/discovery.

After that - Load "ircomm" and "ircomm-tty" - Then open /dev/ircomm
with your minicom - And you should get an "OK" for an "AT".

I have successfully used S25 and S35 with my ThinkPad 390E and T21
