You need to do karma_helper -u as root first to unbind it, then 
karma_helper -l.  Or you can just unplug it (though do be sure you unmount 
the disk first).

Yeah, it's the timeout issue.  I did submit a fix for this upstream yesterday,
and right now I'm working on getting Keith's eject patch together which I'll 
also submit with his blessing.  That will address your other concern if it 
gets picked up.
