Okay, I know that it's probably a winmodem, I just want to be sure before I buy a PCMIA modem. It's a Lucent K56/v90 model 1646. Tech support at Fujitsu says it is not a winmodem, in that it does not require any sort of driver software, that it is soldered directly onto the motherboard, that it uses some sort of "parallel" interface or port, and that it is "controllerless," so that you cannot access it through a serial port. The product spec page at Lucent does not mention the word "winmodem," (maybe "winmodem" is US Robotics) but it does sort of kind of say that it does in fact need a driver, maybe. The cd-rom that came with the laptop has a "/modem" directory that is chock full of dll and vxd files. To me, all of this spells "winmodem" in upper case. Thanks, Tom Ed White
