I am running Debian v2.0 on a Fujitsu Lifebook C350. I am trying to
get a Viking 56K PC card modem running.

When I insert the card, I get two high beeps. Occasionally, when I run
setserial, I get:

/dev/modem, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02b8, IRQ: 3

When this happens, I can run minicom and enter AT commands and get an
'OK' response. If I run ppp for a while, though, the modem stops
responding and the routing table disappears. If I kill ppp and bring
up minicom, the modem still echos back characters, but not the ones I
type. "A", for example, echoes back as "!".

Most of the time, when I insert the card, the cardmgr beeps twice, but
setserial produces something like:

/dev/modem, UART: 8250, Port: 0x2b8, IRQ: 3

If this happens, I cannot access the modem at all. There is nothing in
the log files to indicate any problem.

I tried different interrupts, including setting the IRQ to zero, with
no luck. I also tried excluding the ports reported by 'cardctl
config,' with no luck. I think it's a port conflict. Which ports
should I exclude/include? Is it possible to specify a port, such as
one reserved for something I don't have, like a token ring adapter?

Right now I can't tell if I just have a cheesy modem or a port
conflict that I haven't resolved.

Thanks for your help,

Tom Ed White
