DS,
The XFree86 NeoMagic driver already supports external monitors at
whatever frequencies are present in the Modeline definitions of the
XF86Config file. You need to start with the default XF86Config file
that is produced when you install the XFree86 NeoMagic drivers. You
will find two Option fields under the "Device" Section with the
Identifier "NeoMagic". These fields are: intern_disp and extern_disp.
If you remove the comment character from either Option, that will enable
either the internal, external, or both displays. The internal option is
used if both fields are commented out. When both displays are used, the
frequency is limited to 60 Hz, the upper limit of the LCD. If you only
enable the external monitor then the driver will use the monitor timings
defined in the Modeline statements which are present in the Monitor
section of the file. If you have XFree86 running on another system that
uses the monitor you intend to use with the laptop, simply copy the
Modeline statements you need into the XF86Config file that is used on
your laptop.

Please feel free to write me directly if you have any more questions.

Best Regards,
Frank
