This is all correct. However if you only have the external
monitor enabled, the driver DOES use the monitor timings
defined in the Modeline statements and fails to produce a
correct LCD display. The only way to get the correct display
back is to go back and re-enable the intern_disp option in
XF86Config and restart X. This isnt a good solution for
obvious reasons.
