  | Subject: Toshiba Tecra 8000????
  |
  | I am considering getting a Toshiba Tecra 8000 and have a few
  | questions:
  |
  | 1) Anyone using one (other than the reference on the laptop page)?
  | 2) Can Linux use the DVD-ROM drive as a CD-ROM?
  | 3) Can Linux use the DVD-ROM as a DVD-ROM (data disc)?

If you get info on this, let me know, I dont have a DVD in mine, but I
would like to add it to my HOWTO.

  | 4) Any info on the internal modem?

It is a winmodem and wont work under linux yet.

  | 5) Any gotchas? Concerns? Unsupported or flakey items?

My experience along with my co-workers that have 8000's as well, is that
the keyboard is very sensitive... we get double characters often when
typing at a normal pace.

  | 6) Anyone using an internal ZIP in a T8000?
  | 7) How well does X work on it (XF86 3.3.3 or later).

X as of 3.3.2 works great with the SVGA server. It will run in 24bit
mode at 1024x768, but it is very choppy. I have been told that this is
because the card cannot truely do 24bit, and windows just fakes it. 16bit
color at the same resolution works great.

As for X stability, it is as good as any other card. I havent had any
crashes. I run kde as my window manager.

  | 8) Any other recommendations for it (memory, disk, etc.)?
  |

I have 196Mb of ram. Things are nice and fast... :-)

  | BTW, I have an internal zip in my Toshiba 700CT and LOVE IT.
  | It is so nice having 100MB of extra read/write space.....
  |
  | I plan to put RedHat 5.2 on it when I finally get the machine.....
  |

you can do a 5.2 install from the network if you set the pcmcia to PCIC
mode in the bois. Otherwise a cd install works fine.

  | Thanks for the information and cheers,
  |

I will be getting a palmpilot III soon. Once I do, I will be alb eto play
withthe IRDA stuff, and post some info about that.
