I had this problem installing Caldera OpenLinux on my Tosh (w/ built-in
CD). I ended up booting with the MS-DOG boot disk that came with the
machine (you can also have a friend with one of the Microsloth systems
make you one), running MSCDEX, that device driver loader to load the
appropriate driver for the CD-ROM and then using the DOS option on Red
Hat (assuming Red Hat has such an option). You can, of course, format
your hard disk however you want once the installation gets under way.
If you don't have a boot disk that supports your CD drive (which you
probably don't) then getting to work could be tricky. I had trouble
getting mscdex to find the driver so it could load it.
Hope this helps.
